Three people are feared dead after a helicopter crashed in Northern Ireland's Mourne Mountains, police said Sunday.

Emergency services and investigators reached the site of late Saturday's accident in the mountains in County Down that are famous for their beauty.

"Police and other emergency services are continuing their work at the scene of the helicopter crash in the Mourne Mountains," a police spokesman said.

"Significant resources are supporting the recovery and initial investigation. The Air Accidents Investigation Branch are now at the scene."

Emergency services were scrambled to the site after a witness reported seeing an aircraft in distress.

Police sources said detectives believe three people may have died as a result of the crash. The BBC said the pilot and two passengers had died.

The Mournes are internationally renowned for their picturesque scenery. The coastal mountain range is designated as an area of outstanding natural beauty.
