A suspected bomb exploded on Saturday afternoon in the town of Omagh, Northern Ireland's police said, but it was not immediately clear if there were any casualties.

"At the moment, all we can confirm is that there has been an explosion in the Highfield Close area of Omagh and it is believed that a device has detonated under a car," a police spokeswoman told AFP.

"At the minute we are not able to confirm any casualties at the present time. The police are responding to the scene there."

She added that the explosion occurred just before 4:00 pm (1500 GMT).
