The body of a university student has been discovered in a canal in Lille, northern France, sparking concern in a city where three other young men were found in similar circumstances in the past year.

French-British national Lloyd Andrieu, 20, disappeared after a night out drinking with friends last Thursday.

A police source said initial forensic tests had not uncovered anything suspicious and he was found in the Deule waterway with his belongings.

The second-year communications student at Lille university was not considered a suicide risk, the source added. An autopsy was set to take place shortly.

Two men aged 22 and 26 were found at the same spot in February, following the discovery of a 33-year-old male there in October. Each of them had disappeared while returning home from a night out.

The latest death has raised fears among Lille's young people who have questioned the decision by local authorities to class the cases as death-by-drowning.

"Every time they tell us that it's an accident, they need to stop taking us for idiots," said one young man who would not give his name.

Work began last week on the installation of an emergency "lifeline" at the canal to prevent drownings.
