Strong quake shakes South Sandwich Islands: USGS
A strong 6.6 magnitude earthquake shook the remote South Sandwich Islands Sunday, the US Geological Survey said.
The quake hit deep, 89 kilometers (54 miles), under the sparsely populated archipelago, at 12:32 pm (1432 GMT). Ninety percent of the largest island is permanently covered with ice.
The epicenter was 37 kilometers (23 miles) from Visokoi Island, South Sandwich Islands and 2,060 kilometers (1,280 miles) east-southeast of Stanley, Falkland Islands.
