A strong 6.5-magnitude earthquake struck the southern Atlantic ocean Wednesday near the South Sandwich Islands, a sparsely populated British territory, the US Geological Survey reported.

The quake struck at 0524 GMT some 85 kilometers (55 miles) east of Visokoi Island, South Sandwich Islands, or 3,480 kilometers (2,160 miles) southeast of Buenos Aires, Argentina.

The US agency said the quake was at a depth of 17.3 kilometers.

The islands, along with nearby South Georgia, serve mainly as a base for British scientific missions to Antarctica.
