Veteran Soviet dissident Vladimir Bukovsky denied charges of making and possessing indecent images of children when he appeared in an English court on Tuesday.

The high-profile dissident, 72, appeared at Cambridge Magistrates' Courts in eastern England.

He pleaded not guilty to five counts of making indecent images of children, five of possessing indecent images of children and one of possessing a prohibited image of a child, the court said.

The offences are alleged to have happened on or before October 28 last year and included still and video images.

Bukovsky was released on unconditional bail ahead of his next appearance, at the higher Cambridge Crown Court on September 1.

Bukovsky, who has lived in exile since 1976, was one of the first to detail the abuse of psychiatric institutions to punish political prisoners of the former Soviet Union, causing an international outcry.
