Anglo-Dutch energy giant Royal Dutch Shell announced Friday it had halted production at the huge Ormen Lange gas field off the coast of Norway, following technical problems.

"We are trying to resolve the problem and we hope to resume production as soon as possible," Shell spokeswoman Kitty Eide told AFP, after the decision to close the second biggest Norwegian gas field, which provides natural gas to Britain.

Situated in the sea off Norway, the site has a production capacity of 70 million cubic meters of gas, and provides 20 percent of British natural gas needs.
