Queen to visit Australia in October: palace
Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip will visit Australia in October, hot on the heels of their grandson Prince William who has just wrapped up a trip there, the palace said Thursday.
The visit -- the 16th by the British monarch and her husband -- will include the Commonwealth heads of government meeting in the western city of Perth from October 28-30, Buckingham Palace said in a statement.
The monarch, who holds the title Queen of Australia, has been a frequent visitor to the former colony throughout her reign, making the first trip with her husband in 1954, the year after her coronation.
Their last visit was in 2006.
"The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh (Prince Philip) will visit Australia in the autumn. This visit will include the Commonwealth heads of government meeting in Perth," the statement said.
William also has strong ties to the country and paid a visit earlier this month to Queensland, which was hit by massive floods, killing more than 30 people, and then by Cyclone Yasi.
His trip came just weeks before his wedding to long-term girlfriend Kate Middleton on April 29.
