Queen Elizabeth II has made a private donation to the flood relief efforts in Australia, Buckingham Palace said Thursday.

Australia's head of state donated to the appeal launched by the northeastern state of Queensland's Premier Anna Bligh, a spokesman said. The amount was not disclosed.

Queensland state capital Brisbane, Australia's third-largest city, was turned into a "war zone" Thursday with whole suburbs under water and infrastructure smashed as the worst flood in decades hit 30,000 properties.

At least 15 people have been killed.

On December 31, the queen said she was following the developing disaster with "great concern".

She sent her "sincere sympathies" to the hundreds of thousands affected, in a message to Queensland Governor Penelope Wensley, her representative in the state.
