Quebec, Scotland separatist leaders to meet
Quebec's separatist premier will meet next week with her Scottish counterpart Alex Salmond, who is to hold a referendum in 2014 on Scotland's independence from Britain, government sources said Tuesday.
Pauline Marois is to travel to Edinburgh for the private meeting after stops in Davos, Switzerland for this year's World Economic Forum, and in London where she will promote Quebec companies.
In Edinburgh, Marois is also to meet with opposition leaders.
Marois's Parti Quebecois, the standard-bearer of the Canadian province's independence movement, won control of Quebec's National Assembly in September, defeating the federalist Liberals who had ruled since 2003.
But the party failed to win a majority and with recent polls showing support for independence at a historic low Marois has said Quebec separatists need to work to win back the level of backing that saw them nearly win a 1995 referendum on splitting from the rest of Canada.
