Portuguese police said Thursday they had seized six tonnes of hashish, including three hidden amongst bales of straw, and arrested two Britons.

The two Britons, aged 38 and 40, are suspected of being part of an international drug trafficking gang, a police statement said.

Their arrests last weekend led to the seizure of a lorry in the southern Algarve region containing three tonnes of hashish hidden in straw.

Police found a further three tonnes of the drug, which was believed to come from Morocco, in additional searches.
