One third of Canadians support cutting ties with the British monarchy, said a poll released on the eve of Prince William and his bride's visit to Canada.

In Quebec, a former French colony conquered by the British in 1763, disaffection with the royals increases to 60 percent, according to the Angus Reid poll for Canadian media.

The rest, however, agreed that the duke and duchess of Cambridge's June 30-July 8 visit will give a "big boost" to the monarchy in this country, said a statement.

Prince William, second in line of succession to the British throne, and his wife Catherine, will visit Ottawa, Quebec City, Montreal, Prince Edward Island, the Northwest Territories and Calgary.

After Canada, the couple will travel to California in July.
