One British citizen was killed Friday and another seriously injured in a suicide attack on a US aid organisation in northern Afghanistan, the British embassy in Kabul said.

The dead Briton was among three foreigners killed in the pre-dawn attack, which also left two Afghan security personnel dead, officials said.

"One British citizen was killed and one is in a critical but stable condition," British embassy spokesman Melanie Scarlett told AFP.

She had no other details.

A German security guard was also killed in the attack, a US embassy official said on condition he was not named. The other foreign fatality was thought to be from the Philippines but there was no immediate confirmation.

The attack took place on the compound of aid contractor Development Alternatives Inc (DAI) in the northern city of Kunduz.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai said six militants were involved, including two who detonated explosive vests.

Police said gun battles lasted about seven hours, until all the militants had been killed.
