No charges will be brought against a British police officer who struck a man who died shortly afterwards in the London G20 protests last year, state prosecutors announced Thursday.

Ian Tomlinson, 47, was filmed being hit by the officer with a baton and being pushed to the ground as he walked through the demonstrations in the City of London financial district on April 1, minutes before collapsing.

"There is no realistic prospect of a conviction for unlawful act manslaughter," the Crown Prosecution Service said.

"There is also no realistic prospect of a conviction for assault occasioning actual bodily harm or misconduct in public office."
