A self-portrait by Edouard Manet sold for 22.4 million pounds at Sotheby's auction house in London on Tuesday, setting a new record for a work by the master impressionist.

"This is a record for a Manet," a spokeswoman for Sotheby's told AFP, after "Self-Portrait with Palette" (1878), one of only two self-portraits he painted, sold for 33.2 million dollars or 27 million euros including buyer's premium.

The last auction record set for the French painter was in November 1989, when "La Rue Mosnier Aux Drapeaux" (1878) fetched 16.4 million pounds at Christie's in New York, the spokeswoman said.

Despite setting a new record, the painting that was sold Tuesday to a bidder in the room at Sotheby's missed its maximum estimate price of 30 million pounds.

Elsewhere at the sale, another record was set for a work by Andre Derain, "Arbres a Collioure", which sold for 16.3 million pounds or 19.5 million euros to an anonymous bidder on the phone, Sotheby's said.

"It was a record by quite a large margin," the Sotheby's spokeswoman said.

The previous auction record for Derain had been set in November 2009 at Sotheby's in New York, when "Barques au port de Collioure" sold for 8.6 million pounds or 14 million dollars.
