New British PM faces 'difficult choices': EU's Barroso
Britain's new Prime Minister David Cameron faces "difficult choices in difficult times", EU chief Jose Manuel Barroso said Wednesday as he welcomed the new leader.
"I wish you and your government every success in the demanding work ahead. Like all European Governments, you face difficult choices in difficult times," Barrosso said in his message which offered "warmest congratulations" to Cameron who has put together a coalition with the centrist Liberal Democrats.
Barroso voiced confidence that the Conservative leader will "chart the right course to steer the United Kingdom out of the current crisis and back on the path of sustainable growth."
Barroso, who has only seen Labour leaders from Britain since he first took up his job in 2004, stressed that many of the challenges facing Britain were shared by European partners -- economic recovery, fighting global poverty, tackling climate change and ensuring energy security.
He said he looked forward to working closely with Cameron also on "boosting the internal market and promoting smarter regulation, more transparency and greater accountability in the European Union."
