N.Korea TV airs British soccer film
"Bend It Like Beckham" has become the first Western movie to be screened on North Korean TV.
The 2002 British comedy drama starring Keira Knightley was shown on Sunday to mark the 10th anniversary of diplomatic ties between London and Pyongyang.
The film follows the travails of a teenage girl with a rebellious streak growing up in an orthodox Hindu community in London and features football, a sport beloved of North Koreans.
But it depicts some topics considered taboo in conservative North Korea, such as homosexuality and inter-racial relationships.
The British embassy helped to arrange the broadcast and Martin Uden, London's envoy to North Korea, posted a message Thursday night on his Twitter account revealing the film had aired.
"Happy Christmas in Pyongyang. On 26/12 Bend it Like Beckham was 1st ever western-made film to air on TV. Well done to UK Embassy 4 arranging," Uden wrote.
"The pleasure's mine! Great story and happy that UK Embassy's efforts were successful."
