Paul McCartney will perform a concert for US President Barack Obama next month when he visits the White House to receive a prize, the British pop legend announced Monday.

Obama and his wife Michelle will host the former Beatle on June 2, when the president will present him with the third Gershwin Prize for Popular Song from the Library of Congress, said a statement on his website.

The prize, which commemorates US songwriters George and Ira Gershwin, is awarded to musicians for a lifetime of work and last year went to Stevie Wonder.

McCartney, 67, gave fans a heads up about the gig in a webchat last week, saying: "If there is an announcement mentioning the White House, remember where you heard it first."
