French prosecutors charged a man Wednesday with the February murder of 65-year-old British woman Carol Hagues, and remanded him in custody, a source close to the investigation said.

The 45-year-old man was a close friend of Hagues and is a resident of Cagnes-sur-Mer, the Mediterranean coastal town where Hagues' body was found in her studio apartment on February 11 with several stab wounds, said the source.

Hagues' companion was originally detained over the murder, before being cleared.
