A cement-mixing lorry plunged off a bridge and on to a London-bound train in a freak accident on Friday, injuring several people and leaving others trapped, officials said.

Emergency services were at the scene of the accident in Oxshott, a commuter town on the outskirts of the capital, operator Network Rail said in a statement.

It said the service from the southern town of Guildford to London "was halted when a cement mixer lorry came off an overbridge".

"The vehicle landed on some of the train's coaches of an eight-coach unit. So far, there are no reports of fatalities though it is believed there are several people injured," the statement said.

A fire service official said on condition of anonymity that several people were trapped in the train and firefighters were trying to get them out.

Television pictures show a huge gash in the roof of one of the train carriages where the lorry fell.
