Latvian President Andris Berzins made an unexpected contribution in the fiery debate on Scottish independence Thursday, giving implicit backing to the "No" vote ahead of a referendum due to take place on September 18.

"My hope and belief is that Scotland will stay with the European Union," Berzins said, implying he hoped it would not leave the United Kingdom.

European Commission chief Jose Manuel Barroso has said that any newly independent state emerging from the EU would "become a third country" with respect to it and that "treaties would no longer apply on its territory."

Such a state could however go on to apply to become an EU member, he added.
