Italian hair fetishist faces extradtition after UK murder
An Italian man with a hair fetish faces extradition from Britain after a court convicted him Wednesday of murdering a woman in Britain and linked him to the killing of a girl in his homeland.
Danilo Restivo, 39, bludgeoned his neighbour Heather Barnett to death with a hammer in the southern English coastal resort of Bournemouth in 2002.
He then cut off the 48-year-old's breasts before putting a clump of an unidentified person's hair in her right hand and some of her own under her left hand, Winchester Crown Court heard.
Prosecutors said that the method of her murder was similar to that of Elsa Claps, 16, in Potenza, Italy, in 1993.
Restivo is subject to a European arrest warrant issued by Italy and is expected to be extradited to stand trial for the murder of Claps.
Prosecutors in the British trial said Restivo had the condition trichophilia, when people are sexually aroused by human hair, and had admitted cutting off the hair of more than a dozen women in Britain and Italy.
The trial heard that next to Claps' body there were locks of her own hair, while her trousers and underwear were lowered to the same level as those of Barnett, and her bra was cut in the same way.
Michael Bowes, prosecuting, said there was "compelling evidence" that Claps was murdered by Restivo, who moved to Britain in 2002 to move in with his wife whom he met in a chatroom.
