British Prime Minister David Cameron arrived Wednesday at French President Nicolas Sarkozy's official seaside retreat following the death of his father in a French hospital.

Cameron and family members arrived in a French official motorcade in the late afternoon after visiting the hospital in Toulon where his 77-year-old father Ian Cameron had been pronounced dead earlier in the day.

He was ushered inside the grounds of the Fort de Bregancon, the elegant seafront residence on the Mediterranean coast put at his disposal by the French leader, and made no statement to waiting reporters.

Downing Street had earlier said Cameron was expected to remain in France overnight while making arrangements to repatriate the body of his father, who was on holiday in France when he was hit by a stroke.

Cameron abandoned his official schedule and flew to France on hearing the news. Sarkozy put a helicopter at his disposal to rush him to the hospital, where he spent three hours before heading to Bregancon.
