Raoul Moat, the fugitive gunman snared by British police after a massive manhunt, died in hospital after apparently shooting himself Saturday in an armed siege.

"Police can now confirm that Raoul Thomas Moat, 37, of Newcastle (northeast England) died in hospital early this morning," Northumbria Police said.

"It followed several hours of negotiations between Moat and police but at around 1:15 am (0015 GMT) it appears, from information available, Moat shot himself.

"He was taken to hospital but was pronounced dead at around 2:20 am (0120 GMT).

"No officers or members of the public were injured."

Moat was rushed by ambulance from the village of Rothbury in northeast England to Newcastle General Hospital, where he was carried in on a stretcher, with a blanket covering his head.
