Three Frenchmen aged 25 to 28 were to appear before a judge Tuesday over the death of a 37-year-old British citizen in a late-night fight outside a bar in Cannes, southeast France, investigators said.

The Briton, a former soldier doing part-time work in the French Riviera resort, was with two friends during the altercation in the early hours of Monday, but they ran off, a source close to the investigation said.

He was already dead by the time help arrived.

His alleged attackers claim the Briton was drunk and had instigated the fight, said the source.

The three were questioned by police on Monday, and were to be brought before a judge in nearby Grasse late Tuesday "for delivering mortal blows", prosecutor Jean-Michel Cailleau said.
