France's Sarkozy congratulates new British PM
French President Nicolas Sarkozy congratulated David Cameron on his appointment as British prime minister Tuesday and said he hoped they would work to buttress the "exceptional ties" between the two nations.
In a statement, Sarkozy expressed his "warm congratulations for the success of his high mission," adding that he hoped to work together with Cameron to reinforce "the exceptional ties between France and the United Kingdom."
A statement said Sarkozy had underscored the need for both countries to work together in a rapidly changing world to improve world security, overcome the global financial crisis or fight against climate change.
The 43-year-old Cameron, who becomes Britain's youngest prime minister for some two centuries, was appointed after Gordon Brown admitted defeat after five days of political limbo after deadlocked general elections.
