Flybe orders up to 140 Embraer aircraft: statement

British low-cost airline Flybe has ordered up to 140 aircraft potentially worth 5.0 billion dollars (3.8 billion euros) from Brazilian manufacturer Embraer to aid European expansion, it said Tuesday.

"Flybe ... today announced a substantial order to purchase up to 140 Embraer 175 and E-family aircraft," the airline said in a statement.

The deal comprises firm orders for 35 Embraer 88-seater E175 jets, with options to buy another 65 planes, and purchase rights for a further 40. The total potential value is 5.0 billion dollars.

"Flybe is procuring this capacity to support its planned European growth," it added.

The first E175 airplanes are scheduled for delivery in September 2011, while final delivery of the firm orders is due in March 2017.
