Eurostar said its London to Paris train service did not operate for several hours earlier Thursday, after a tunnel was closed in Britain due to safety fears.

A spokesman told AFP there were reports of smoke in a tunnel running under the River Thames, in London, and the track operator decided to close the track.

"There were reports earlier this evening of smoke within the tunnel," he said.

"Purely for safety reasons, (rail operator) Network Rail made the decision to suspend services on that line."

He stressed the smoke was not reported in the Channel Tunnel itself.
