Cupcake fans reject Scottish independence
If the fate of Scotland were decided by the eating of cupcakes, it would remain within the United Kingdom after the historic referendum this week, an Edinburgh bakery has found.
Since March, Cuckoo's bakery has been selling "Opinion Poll" cupcakes decorated with union jacks representing a "No" vote, blue and white Scottish Saltires for a "Yes" vote, and question marks for the undecided.
The result was tight but clear: 47.7 percent opted to eat cakes representing the status quo, compared to 43.5 percent who thought independence was more to their taste.
"Our poll has been conducted professionally throughout the campaign and we are delighted that the results have shown to be so similar to the official results," said co-founder Graham Savage.
Polls have consistently given the "No" side an edge in the campaign, but the lead has narrowed in recent weeks and is now on a knife edge.
