Channel tunnel traffic suspended due to smoke alert: company
Channel Tunnel rail services between Britain and continental Europe were suspended Saturday after after a fire alert caused by smoke, train operators said.
The incident happened shortly after 0600 GMT, said a spokeswoman for Eurotunnel, which runs freight services through the rail link under the Channel.
"There was some smoke emanating from a shuttle transporting trucks. Within 10 minutes all passengers were evacuated into the service tunnel," she told AFP.
No Eurostar passenger trains managed to get through the tunnel Saturday and passengers waiting to travel are being held at stations, a Eurostar spokeswoman said.
Eurostar and Eurotunnel indicated they hoped to resume services later Saturday.
