Cameron, Merkel come bearing gifts for Sarkozy baby
German Chancellor Angela Merkel and British Prime Minister David Cameron came to an EU summit Sunday bearing gifts for French President Nicolas Sarkozy's new baby daughter, respectively a teddy bear and a baby blanket.
Merkel's gesture was tendered amid no-holds-barred talks between Paris and Berlin ahead of the euro crisis, with Europe's power couple in deep disagreement over how to overcome the euro's debt woes.
The French leader even missed the birth of his daughter, Giulia, on October 19. After having to rush to Germany for talks with the chancellor, he arrived three hours later to see his the baby and supermodel wife, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy.
And as Sarkozy held intense negotiations with his EU counterparts in Brussels, Bruni-Sarkozy left the Paris clinic with her daughter on Sunday.
Cameron and wife Samantha meanwhile chose a pink baby blanket woven in the prime minister's constituency of Witney by a business "breathing new life into an unique centuries-old heritage industry", his office said.
