A British Midland International flight from London to Cairo turned back due to the curfew being brought forward in the Egyptian capital, a spokesman for the airline said.

The flight had 64 passengers and six crew on board.

Passengers were to be offered overnight accomodation at London Heathrow Airport, or the option to rebook if they no longer wish to travel.

The return flight from Cairo to London has duly been cancelled.

"Passengers booked on this flight are advised not to travel to Cairo airport," a spokesman said.

Tens of thousands of anti-regime protesters rallied in Cairo in defiance of a curfew that came into effect at 4:00pm (1400 GMT) and an army order not to congregate.
