CORRECTED: BP: 48 hours needed to see how much oil captured by cap

British energy giant BP said Friday it would take about 48 hours before it could say how much oil was being captured by a cap placed over a ruptured well in the Gulf of Mexico.

Chief executive Tony Hayward told investors that at this stage it was impossible to say how much the spill would cost but it would be significant and possibly severe.

At the same time, Hayward said the company, with major interests in the Gulf and United States as a whole, intended to be a player in the country for the long-term.
