British voters overwhelmingly rejected changing the electoral system, with 69 percent opposing a switch to a new system in a national referendum, a BBC projection said Friday.

Only 31 percent supported the change to the Alternative Vote (AV) system backed by Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg and his Liberal Democrat party, according to the broadcaster.

It forecast a 41 percent turnout.

With 296 areas out of 440 declaring their results, the official totals were 68.56 against introducing the AV system and 31.44 in favour. Only six areas voted "yes."
