A 22-year-old Briton vacationing on the Greek island of Crete will be arraigned before a prosecutor after allegedly assaulting a paramedic inside a hospital, local police said on Tuesday.

The suspect had been found unconscious on Monday on a street in the town of Malia, a resort popular with British tourists for its wild nightlife.

An ambulance was summoned to take him to hospital as he was bleeding from a number of cuts on his body, police said.

He was injured after breaking a hotel window in a drunken fit, they said.

But upon arrival at Venizelio Hospital at the island capital of Iraklio, the youth asked to go to the bathroom, pulled out a toilet pipe and assaulted the 36-year-old paramedic tasked with accompanying him to the emergency unit.

He then tried to flee but was arrested by police and will be taken to a prosecutor on Wednesday.
