A British tourist was shot dead on the Venezuelan resort island of Margarita after resisting a robbery attempt by four people at his hotel, authorities said Wednesday.

According to the statement, Thomas Ossel, 28, of London was shot several times Monday night after refusing to surrender his valuables to the robbers.

Ossel's brother, Jack, 21, was wounded in the back with a knife during the attack as he tried to defend his brother.

Witnesses said four people posing as tourists looking for a room at the Casa Rosa Inn first subdued the innkeepers, then, armed with a pistol, began moving from room to room seeking money and valuables from the guests.

When the assailants entered the room where the two brothers were staying, they refused to surrender their valuables and Thomas Ossel was shot repeatedly.

Local prosecutors said the suspects were able to flee the scene before the police arrived.

Margarita is a major Venezuelan tourist destination, although in the last year, four tourists have died there.
