British singer Lily Allen announced on Thursday she was expecting her first child following a series of hints from the pop star in recent months that she was planning to retire from music.

"I can't wait," the 25-year-old told fans on microblogging site Twitter, after revealing she was three months pregnant with a child by boyfriend Sam Cooper, a builder who she started dating last summer.

"Thank you all for all the lovely messages, I'm delighted! I really want to start a family," she said in a tweet.

The singer's spokesman said the Allen's professional commitments "will carry on as normal", including a scheduled performance at the Big Chill festival, in southwest England, Sunday.

"Alright, Still", Allen's best-selling debut album, brought the singer international fame in 2006 when it sold over 2.6 million copies, producing a number one British single, "Smile", and earning Allen a Grammy nomination.

Her second album "It's Not Me, It's You", provided another number one single in Britain and helped Allen scoop three prizes at the prestigious Ivor Novello Awards in May.

In 2008, the singer suffered a miscarriage after becoming pregnant her then- boyfriend Ed Simons, one half of the British dance duo the Chemical Brothers.

Allen recently spoke about wanting children, saying: "I don't think I'm that young to have a baby. My mother had me when she was 23."

She added that having a family would give her something "more solid, something that exists, that makes me feel more grounded."
