Spanish coastguards Friday rescued a 65-year-old British man suffering from hypothermia two days into a bid to row solo across the Atlantic, authorities said.

The man made a radio distress call and rescuers in a helicopter hauled him from his seven-metre (23-foot) boat, 47 nautical miles off Tenerife island, the coastguard service said in a statement.

It said the man was taken to Hospital Sur in Tenerife suffering from hypothermia, exhaustion and asthma.

The man had set off from Spain's Canary Islands on Wednesday alone in the boat "and was trying to cross the Atlantic", the statement said.

A coastguard official declined to name the man and had no further information on his rowing mission. Hospital officials were unavailable to comment on Friday.
