Retail sales in Britain unexpectedly grew by 0.2 percent in March from the level in February, official data showed on Thursday.

Analysts had forecast a drop of 0.4 percent, according to a poll by Dow Jones Newswires, after a fall in February.

Retail sales meanwhile increased by 1.3 percent in March compared with 12 months earlier, the Office for National Statistics said in a statement. That compared with expectations for a rise of 1.1 percent.
