Retail sales in Britain increased by a modest 0.3 percent in November from October as consumers bought goods in time for Christmas, official data showed on Thursday.

Sales jumped 1.1 percent in November compared with 12 months earlier, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said in a statement.

The monthly increase was roughly in line with market expectations, while economists had forecast a 0.8-percent gain on a 12-month basis.
