British queen 'appalled' by US storm deaths
Queen Elizabeth II is "appalled and saddened" by the deaths caused by storms that have devastated parts of the southern United States, she said Wednesday in a message to President Barack Obama.
The disaster has already claimed nearly 350 lives.
"I have been appalled and saddened to hear of the tragic loss of life caused by the terrible storms that have hit Alabama and the south of the United States," the monarch said in the message released by Buckingham Palace.
"Please pass on my deep sympathy to the families and friends of all those who have been killed and to all those who have been affected."
The queen's eldest son Prince Charles, the heir to the throne, is on a two-day official visit to Washington ahead of Obama's May 24-26 state visit to Britain.
The newlywed Prince William's father was to meet Obama in the White House's Oval Office on Wednesday for talks on a range of subjects.
