British media and education group Pearson, owner of the Financial Times newspaper, said Tuesday it had agreed to buy US education technology company Schoolnet for $230 million (158 million euros).

Pearson said Schoolnet's data-based solutions would complement its own products and services that help boost student achievement through diagnostic tools and tailored instruction.

"Being able to offer a connective digital spine for learning has been Pearson's goal for years," Pearson chief executive Marjorie Scardino said in a statement.

"Schoolnet has shared our passion, and together we can make that spine more flexible and powerful for schools, teachers and students."

Based in New York, Schoolnet serves more than five million US pupils.
