British police probe tax affairs of gunman who killed 12
The British taxi driver who shot dead 12 people during a rampage through a picturesque rural area was being investigated over his tax affairs, police confirmed Saturday.
Derrick Bird, 52, "was subject to an ongoing investigation by Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs", Cumbria Police said in a statement, adding they were probing his finances and whether he had rowed with other cabbies.
Bird struck Wednesday in Cumbria, northwest England, killing 12 people and injuring 11.
One of his friends had said he was worried about an investigation by tax authorities into his finances, while media reports suggested a family feud over a will.
