A British minister hailed the country's close relationship with Algeria as he arrived on Thursday for a 24-hour visit to discuss security issues and economic cooperation.

"The UK enjoys an excellent bilateral relationship with Algeria," said Alistair Burt, the Foreign Office Minister for the Middle East and North Africa, in a statement.

"There is established cooperation on a broad range of issues, including migration and counter-terrorism. We have a long established energy relationship and trade has experienced double digit growth in recent years," he said.

Burt will discuss trade and investment opportunities, counter-terrorism operations and the Middle East peace process during the visit to the north African country.
