British man jailed for microwaving favourite hamster
A British court sentenced a man to nine weeks in prison Wednesday after he killed his favourite pet hamster by cooking it in a microwave during a drunken row with his girlfriend.
Unemployed Anthony Parker, 29, was also banned from keeping any animals for five years after he admitted causing unnecessary suffering to the rodent resulting in its death.
Parker told police after his arrest in Hartlepool in northeastern England: "I didn't mean to kill her. She was the best hamster I ever had. She was called Suzie."
Prosecutors said the Syrian hamster died "in agony". Its lips were burned and its eyes had turned opaque.
"It will have been horrific for that poor little hamster. I think justice has been served," said Lucy Hoehne, who investigated the case for the Royal Society for Prevention of Cruelty to animals.
The case comes two days after a British woman who sparked an Internet hate campaign after she was caught on camera dumping a cat into a rubbish bin was charged with causing unnecessary suffering to the animal.
