British jobless rate rises to 8.0 percent: official data

Britain's unemployment rate leapt to 8.0 percent in the three months to the end of February, compared with the September-November period, official data showed on Wednesday.

"The unemployment rate for the three months to February 2010 was 8.0 percent," the Office for National Statistics said in a statement.

"The rate was up 0.1 (percentage points) on the quarter and it has not been higher since the three months to September 1996."

The number of unemployed people increased by 43,000 in the three months to the end of February to reach 2.5 million -- which was the highest level since 1994.
