British industrial output edges up: official data

Industrial output across Britain rose by only 0.1 percent in January compared with activity in December, as stormy weather affected North Sea energy production, official data showed on Tuesday.

But output jumped by 2.9 percent compared with January 2013, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) added in a statement.

Manufacturing output -- which excludes mining and quarrying, electricity, gas and water supply -- grew 0.4 percent in January compared with December. It increased by 3.3 percent year-on-year, the ONS said.

"Anecdotal evidence suggests that the severe weather conditions across the North Sea hampered production during January," it added.
