British exit from EU 'unimaginable': Germany's Schaeuble

It would be "unimaginable" for Britain to leave the European Union, German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble told the Financial Times in an interview published on Monday.

"Historically, politically, democratically, culturally, Great Britain is entirely indispensable for Europe," said the minister, who is a one of Chancellor Angela Merkel's closest confidants.

Speculation over a possible exit by Britain from the EU has increased after British Prime Minister David Cameron failed to block Jean-Claude Juncker from becoming European Commission president.

Britain is due to hold a referendum on membership of the 28-member bloc if Cameron's Conservative party wins a general election next year.
