A British diplomat in his fifties was found dead in a hotel room in Amman on Thursday a day after he arrived from Iraq en route to Britain, police said.

"Indications show that it was a natural death because different kinds of medicines were found in his room," a police spokesman told AFP.

"But an autopsy will be performed tomorrow (Friday) anyway. He arrived in Amman from Iraq yesterday en route to Britain."

The police spokesman did not release the man's name.

Another source said the man worked as a technician at the British embassy in Baghdad and that he had a diplomatic passport.
