British PM tenders resignation to Queen Elizabeth II
British Prime Minister Gordon Brown tendered his resignation Tuesday to Queen Elizabeth II, making way for a new power-sharing government led by Conservative leader David Cameron to be formed.
Brown and his wife spent over 15 minutes at Buckingham Palace -- where he travelled after announcing his resignation outside his Downing Street office -- leaving in an official convoy.
A statement issued by Buckingham Palace afterward said the queen had accepted his resignation.
Earlier Brown told journalists he would quit immediately to let Cameron form a government following five days of political deadlock after Thursday's poll failed to produce a clear winner.
